Our mission is to reduce the alcohol related deaths within our community. In 1987 I lost a couple of people that I loved very much: both of them were in their early 20’s at the time. I decided to start picking up my friends and giving them a ride home. I ended up calling this service project Provide-A-Ride. My friends would call me and I would provide a Safe and Sober ride home for them. I did not charge them. I would obtain sponsors and donations to underwrite this life saving project.
Three years later I started getting too many phone calls and had a good problem. I had to think of a way to have others help me: so I came up with a combination of the designated driver and a membership drive. This is where individuals would purchase a FADD membership and become the Designated Driver that would provide a Safe and Sober ride home for their loved ones. This campaign works very, very well. FADD members save lives! As I write this “bio” FADD has over 7,000 members nationwide. We also have members in Canada and in Mexico and are looking to expand globally through the Internet this year.
Presently we seek the support of the community. You can help by donating or sponsoring our efforts to keep our community safe! FADD is planning to open up an educational and national calling center in Visalia, CA. This community learning center will also be a clearinghouse so that we can continue to distribute educational and awareness materials that are being donated by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), our partner, please visit www.recoverymonth.gov.
Plans for:
A) Educational center are to have a place where the community may learn more about the deadly consequences of drinking and driving. They will have access to printed materials, videos and computers as well.
B) National calling center will have FADD reps on computers and phone lines to expand our membership drive, donations and sponsors as well.
FADD has partnered with a national organization called National Grants Conferences. We also need a couple of individuals with grant writing experience to help us with this much needed work.
